Tuesday Trivia: Junk Food Edition

ZOMG!  Tuesday Trivia has returned from hiatus!  I’m not sure what it was doing on hiatus; it just left me a note one morning saying it needed some “personal space” and returned just as suddenly last night, staggering up to the sliding glass door on the patio and falling into the garden hose, stinking of cheap gin and Drakkar Noir.  I think it’s been holed up at Marfreless.

So today’s Tuesday Trivia is gorging itself on junk food, I think in a dual effort to enrage me in the early, stabby stages of my diet, as well as to quell its raging hangover.  Hope you’re in the mood for a sugar rush, folks…

  1. What was the flavor of the original filling in Twinkies and what prompted the change to its current flavor, vanilla?
  2. In addition to lending her (misspelled) name to the eponymous snack cake company, the wife of the fourth U.S. President, Dolley Madison, is also credited with popularizing what treat in America?
  3. What snack enjoyed by children worldwide is made from the root of a plant that’s not only bitter but also poisonous, containing concentrated cyanide?
  4. The flavor that we call “bubblegum” is actually a combination of four different flavors.  Name three of them.
  5. The North Carolina-based rockabilly band Southern Culture on the Skids has been known to throw what treats to their audiences at shows?
  6. BONUS:  What famously secretive and reclusive, privately-owned candy company is responsible for producing the world’s most popular candy bar?  And what is that candy bar?

And there you have it, folks!  I’m going to drag Tuesday Trivia into a cold shower and sober it up while y’all make with the answers.  We’ll see you back here on Thursday!

  1. 1. What was the flavor of the original filling in Twinkies and what prompted the change to its current flavor, vanilla?

Oooh…I know this one….Banana. It was changed to vanilla due to the scent causing confusion on the sets of porno flicks everywhere. Real bananas – easy to clean. Twinkies? Eh…not so much. (either that or something silly like rationing during WWII)

    2. In addition to lending her (misspelled) name to the eponymous snack cake company, the wife of the fourth U.S. President, Dolley Madison, is also credited with popularizing what treat in America?

    Fifths of Bourbon.

    3. What snack enjoyed by children worldwide is made from the root of a plant that’s not only bitter but also poisonous, containing concentrated cyanide?

    Micheal Jackson

    4. The flavor that we call “bubblegum” is actually a combination of four different flavors. Name three of them.

Scary, Sporty, Baby, Ginger and Mrs. David Beckham.

    Oh wait….that’s bubblegum POP….

    5. The North Carolina-based rockabilly band Southern Culture on the Skids has been known to throw what treats to their audiences at shows?

Their cousin’s underwear (hey, it’s the South)

BONUS: What famously secretive and reclusive, privately-owned candy company is responsible for producing the world’s most popular candy bar? And what is that candy bar?

Soylent Green. – With butter sauce.

  2. 1. Banana. Artificial banana flavoring is gross.
    2. Oatmeal cookies.
    3. Bammies, Boba, tapioca, or anything else made with cassava.
    4. Strawberry, banana, spun sugar.
    5. Let’s see… Southern… fried chicken?
    6. Mars, Inc. makes Snickers.

  3. 1. Banana
    2. Ice Cream…thanks!
    3. Tapioca – Cassava
    4. Wintergreen, Peppermint, Vanilla, & Cinnamon
    5. Fried Chicken
    6. Mars – Snickers Bar

  4. Chris beat me to the answers, but here I go anyway:

    1. Banana cream – there was a banana shortage during WWII so it was replaced by vanilla.

    2. I scream! You scream! We all scream for ICE CREAM!!!🙂

    3. Tapioca (that shit is NAS-TAY!!)

    4. Wintergreen, peppermint, vanilla and cinnamon

    5. fried chicken.

    6. Mars, Inc. makes the Snickers Bar (best served fresh from the freezer, IMO)

  5. OK! I think I found my mistake:

    5. Banana pudding!

  6. healthyhoustonfoodie

    1. Banana cream. Blech!
    2. She really liked ice cream, and she served it to guests. She also liked a cake flavored with caraway and brandy.
    3. Tapioca.
    4. Wintergreen, cinnamon, vanilla, peppermint.
    5. Fried chicken AND banana pudding!
    6. Mars, Inc’s Snickers bar. Mmmmm…Snickers flurry…*Homer Simpson drool*

  7. healthyhoustonfoodie

    1. There was a shortage during WWII. Forgot that.

  8. OK, I just feel totally dumb at this game.

  9. Awesome job anthropomorphizing “Tuesday Trivia”….very clever🙂

    OK:
    1) Banana cream – a WWII shortage shortened the life of these innards only to be revived later for the infamous “Banana Flip” (YUM!) which are now obsolete
    2) Devils Food Zingers? No? How about ice cream?
    3) Tapioca
    4) Proprietary formulas and all that, it’s a mixture of natural and artificial flavors but mostly artificial and I don’t think any one can be named. But that may be a lack of google skills on my part.
    5) Is it specifically Southern culture that’s on the skids? I was under the impression that the entirety of American culture was skidding higgledy piggledy. Who knew? But the enduring question, in my mind, is why would anyone throw fried chicken OR bread pudding at their audience??????

Bonus: The Snickers bar, created by Mars Inc. in 1930

  10. 1. Banana; war shortages.
    2. Ice cream.
    3. Tapioca.
    4. Peppermint, wintergreen, vanilla.
    5. Fried chicken.
    6. Mars, Inc.; Snickers.

  11. Late to the game but,….

    1. Banana; Shortages caused by a transference of shipping priorities to “war related” goods and of course probelms from the nasty bad evil wolfpack.
    2. Ice cream as she liked to throw parties at her family’s estate during the hot VA summers. God bless her, she stayed beind and protected White House art work and documents when the British came to town (James split )
    3.Tapioca
    4.Peppermint, wintergreen, cinnamon, vanilla
    5. I’ve heard fried chicken stories, but some interesting material has spewed at me during GWAR concerts too.
    6. Mars…Snickers…The Mars family still has a very modest house in Arlington, VA near where I grew up.
